Guide section 36 of 55

Start with the question, not the chart

Do not begin by asking which chart goes here. Define:

  • User — who uses the report?
  • Decision — what decision are they trying to make?
  • Question — what should this page answer?
  • Measure — what are we measuring?
  • Dimensions — how can the measure be broken down?
  • Comparison — compared with what?

A single sentence already gives most of the analytical structure:

Revenue vs Budget by Department over Time

which becomes a page:

KPI Revenue €1.24M
   ↓ vs Budget +4.2%
Trend Revenue by week
   ↓
Breakdown Revenue by department
   ↓
Detail Department / article table
