25 rows · sorted by employee (ascending)Hover a row for tooltip context

Native behaviour simulated: header sorting, vertical and horizontal scrolling, row selection, numeric alignment, conditional colour, tooltip context, loading and empty states.

What it is

The native Table visual renders one row per record (or per grouped combination) with one column per field or measure.

When to use it

Users need to compare or inspect flat records where every row is at the same level of detail.

Native Power BI capability

Yes — Table visual. Sorting, scrolling, column widths, formatting and interactions are all configured in the visual.

UX considerations
  • Define column order by reading priority: identity first, then dimensions, then measures.
  • Right-align numbers, left-align text, and keep one decimal convention per column.
  • Cap visible columns; extra context belongs in a tooltip or a drill-through page.
  • Specify the default sort — Power BI otherwise uses the model order.
BI developer considerations
  • Add fields in the intended column order; renaming happens in the field well.
  • Set 'Show items with no data' deliberately; it changes row counts.
  • Use measures rather than implicit aggregation for anything a user compares.
  • Word wrap, row padding and grid lines control density.
QA considerations
  • Default sort matches the specification.
  • Totals row matches the model, not the visible page of rows.
  • Empty result renders the intended message, not a blank rectangle.
Limitations
  • No fixed pinned columns and no in-cell editing.
  • No true pagination — the table scrolls virtually.
  • Row height is uniform; per-row custom layouts are not possible.
HTML prototype note

This interactive HTML example simulates the native Power BI behaviour. It is not Power BI itself and should not be interpreted as an implementation of the Power BI rendering engine.

Designer ↔ BI developer handoff
UX designer defines
  • Information hierarchy and column order
  • Required fields and measures
  • Default state (sort, filters, selection)
  • Interaction intent and what it should affect
  • Responsive priority and what may be dropped
  • Accessibility expectations and focus order
  • Empty, loading and error states
BI developer implements
  • Dataset fields, measures and relationships
  • Visual configuration in the format pane
  • Filters, sort order and interaction wiring
  • Drill-through / drill-down configuration
  • Conditional formatting rules
  • Row-level security and permissions
  • Query performance optimisation
QA validates
  • Data correctness against the source
  • Correct default state on first load
  • Sorting and filtering behaviour
  • Drill and selection behaviour
  • Permissions and row-level security
  • Empty states and responsive layout
  • Performance and export behaviour
